We are hiring!

Carbomap are looking for a Software Engineer

About Carbomap

Carbomap are environmental mapping specialists. We apply state-of-the-art science to the problems of 3D measurement and mapping of the world’s environment.  Based in the amazing city of Edinburgh, we are surrounded by a lively innovation ecosystem that includes the University, Ecometrica, LTS International, Astrosat, and others.

Carbomap have an international reputation in remote sensing methodologies; LiDAR, forest mapping, satellite radar mapping, and measuring forest structure, carbon sequestration, as well as managing airborne and UAV surveys. We are leaders within this emerging market, having worked with companies, government agencies, NGO’s and research institutes worldwide.

We are seeking a software engineer to work with us on the ongoing development of Carbomap’s instant-Omega (i-Ω). The i-Ω is a compact, real-time, “no-click” processing engine for 3D laser scanning. The i-Ω is a hardware-software product, developed by Carbomap. It offers the users the unique ability of having pre-processed data layers automatically loaded onto a Cloud-based platform without any intermediate step.

  • Review existing classification and segmentation algorithms related to extract trees from a point cloud. You’ll be responsible to improve/adapt them to a GPU architecture.

  • Implement change detection algorithms for detecting change in different types of remotely sensed data, including LiDAR and radar.

  • Implement Deep Learning and/or Machine Learning algorithms to improved point cloud classification. You’ll be responsible from design to implementation of this task.

  • Use Deep Learning to improve tree extraction and characterisation. You’ll be collaborating with Carbomap’s forest monitoring experts to help you to better understand the implementation of such knowledge in Machine Learning.

  • With the team, review and evaluate best hardware options to scale up our system for even greater real time processing power for mobile and airborne LiDAR systems.

  • Implement an API to our current firmware to open up customisation to our customers.

  • Occasional travel to conferences and for customer visits may be required.

What we need to see from you:

Essential skills:

  • Masters or PhD or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Applied Mathematics, or related field that demonstrates skills in software development.

  • Excellent C/C++ programming and software design skills, including debugging, performance analysis, and test design.

  • Experience with GPU programming with CUDA (preferred), OpenCL and/or GPU-based software acceleration libraries.

  • Excellent understanding of real-time embedded software design and be proficient in Linux.

  • Experience with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, PHP, and shell scripts.

  • Ability to work independently, define project goals and scope, and lead your own development effort.

  • Strong communication and collaborative skills are required along with the ability to work in a dynamic product oriented team.

  • You must have an existing right to work in the UK.

Desirable skills

  • Hands-on experience with LiDAR.

  • Knowledge of Computer Graphics.

  • Knowledge of Remote Sensing.

  • Knowledge of GPS technology.

  • Knowledge of SLAM technology.

  • Previous experience in Git and Software Production.

This role requires great team working and communications skills. If you enjoy technical challenges and would like to work in a smaller and less corporate working environment then we’d like to hear from you.
